Let me just start by saying that I absolutely loved the Spatter & Spark app!  This app is one of my new favorite storybook apps for children.  The app is an interactive storybook for children that features two friends – Spark the fox, who is an inventor, and her pal Spatter the porcupine, who is an artist.  I love how this app encourages children to be creative, and to want to invent things and learn how things work!

The app features two reading modes, “Read to me” and “Read alone”.  I always like having the option to choose between reading modes, that way older children can read on their own and little ones can enjoy the narration.  There are 10 interactive scenes (pages) in the app that feature beautiful illustrations and animations.  Each page teaches children about different ways to invent or make art as Spatter & Spark show off their expertise.  I really enjoyed the pages where you help build the bouncy shoes to reach the crow’s window…kids get to help build the the bouncy shoes on one page and then color/decorate them on the next page.  I thought that all the interactions would be wonderful for kids and keep them engaged.

I should mention that the storybook is completely free – which I thought was a great value on an app this detailed.  There are also 4 additional early learning activities (designed by educational experts) which teach things like color recognition, counting, etc. – these are available through in-app purchase.  The learning activities looked like a lot of fun (you can see a preview of each), and I think that they would probably be worth the in-app purchase.

I also wanted to mention that this app has been recommended for children ages 4 through 6 years old, but I believe children of various ages could enjoy the app (especially on “read to me” mode).  The requirements in iTunes also say that you will need an iPad 2 or higher, iPad mini, or iPhone 4 and higher.  In iTunes it is also recommended to have iOS6+ for the best user experience.

I really loved the Spatter & Spark app.  I always enjoy apps that encourage creativity and imagination in our children, and I definitely think that this app does just that.  I would highly recommend this app to parents!

Disclosure: I received a free copy of this app for review purposes.
