ABC: Look.Listen.Write

November 29, 2010

My children’s favorite alphabet song is the Crazy ABC’s from the Barenaked Ladies children’s album, Snacktime. The song goes through the alphabet but instead of singing about apple, ball or cat the lyrics include words like gnarly, irk, jalapeno, knick-knack and mnemonic. The new app from Tangorang Labs reminds me of that quirky piece of lyrical genius. ABC: Look. Listen. Write features twenty-six alphabet inspired illustrations, displayed flashcard style. There are no pictures of dogs, elephants or fish in this app. Instead you have pictures of things like a dodo bird, film noir and a gourd. Really!

When you are done looking at the letter and it’s illustration you can flip the flashcard over and trace the letter. You’ll see a letter outline and then use your finger to write the letter within the outline. Narration is included with each flashcard and you can also listen to it while you trace the letter. I found the app to be well done and everything flowed smoothly and easily.

ABC: Look. Listen. Write is definitely not your traditional flashcard app but I thought it was awesome. The app’s iTune’s description calls the illustrations “whimsical” and I completely agree. It’s tough to choose a favorite but I’d have to go with either H is for Hamlet, Q is for Quicksand or U is for Upside Down. But then again maybe it’s B is for Baboon. That flashcard s for every parent who’s ever taken a five year old boy to the zoo and then dealt with the inevitable giggles and questions when you reach the baboon cage. Classic.

ABC: Look. Listen. Write is a universal app and the graphics look fantastic on both the iPhone and iPad. I’ve tested it out on both devices.

WebMD Baby was released earlier this month and it is awesome! Seriously one of the best “baby” apps I’ve seen to date

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
