Adapted Book – Five Pumpkins

October 19, 2010

Here is another Halloween app, titled Adapted Book – Five Pumpkins. This is a take on the classic song about five little pumpkins who were sitting on a gate. The app takes you through the song, one pumpkin at a time. After each pumpkin says their line there is a number to drag across the screen to the matching pumpkin. The app doesn’t have any animation to the graphics but it does incorporate sign language which is fantastic. For each screen you can view a video that shows you how to sign that portion of the song. In the iPhone version the sign language is viewed separately but in the iPad version it appears on the screen along with the graphics. It was very pleasant to see this Halloween classic adapted in this way.

Price when Reviewed: $.99

I have this app on my ipod touch. Maybe I would like it more if I could see the signing at the same time as the story is read like on the ipad. As a person who is fluent in ASL and was hoping to use this with deaf children, my feedback is that the signing is only “so-so” and doesn’t make any effort to support the concept of number recognition. It seems quite “low budget” to me. I hope there are more efforts to develop quality apps utilizing ASL as the need for language and literacy supports for deaf children is quite high. Thanks for reviewing this product.

Chalk Walk

Chalk Walk is a very unique iPad app. It has been developed to help your children improve the pincer grip they use to hold a pencil.

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
