Alphabytes

March 22, 2011

A word of warning, it’s not a good idea to play around with the Alphabytes app late at night when you’ve got the munchies. You’ll find yourself craving a big bowl of sugary cereal. Why? Because Alphabytes is a cute iPad app that uses alphabet cereal to teach children about letters. Yum! Here are the four activities you’ll find in this app.

Alphabet - In this activity children will get to choose letters from a bowl of the cereal. Each letter has a picture and a simple activity to go along with iit. For example “E” shows an elephant that your child can pet. “X” is a suitcase your child can examine with an X-ray machine.

Trace – Here children use their fingers to trace the shape of the alphabet letters. The letter outlines have numbers and arrows that show which direction the lines should be drawn. As they trace on the screen the letter outline will fill in and when the letter is complete it should look like a piece of alphabet cereal. Your child can trace uppercase or lowercase letters. Or both.

Spell - This activity has chosen a word for each letter of the alphabet. The word is illustrated by a picture and a pile of jumbled up cereal letters. Your child must sort through the letters to find the ones that will spell out the word.

Play - Play is a Memory game with twelve cards. Six cards show letters and six cards show words that begin with those letters. Your child must find the letter that matches up with the correct word to create a match. The word cards will also show a picture of the word.

Each Alphabyte activity has sound effects and pleasant background music. The children who do the voice over work for these activities have adorable voices. I thought the overall concept of using alphabet cereal was very clever and I enjoyed the way you can catch glimpses of spilled milk here and there among the app’s graphics. The graphics themselves look very professional and the app has a well polished feel to it.

Chalk Walk is a very unique iPad app. It has been developed to help your children improve the pincer grip they use to hold a pencil.

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
