Bugs and Buttons

It seems that I’ve been turning to my son for review help quite a bit lately and I’m going to do it again with this fantastic app, Bugs and Buttons. He’s spent a great deal of time playing with the app on his own so I figured he’d be the perfect person to help me tell you what it’s all about. Here’s a quick overview before we get into the individual activities. Bugs and Buttons has 18 games and activities that all involve bugs and/or buttons. They are quirky, educational and fun. The graphics for this app are wonderful, in fact the bugs are almost too realistic looking for me. The app has adaptive play which makes it suitable for a variety of ages. There are also achievements to unlock as you play the activities. There are no written instructions but instructions are visual and easy to understand. Since there is so much content to this app I didn’t make Mr. O go over every activity with me but he did give me a run down on the first six in the app. Here are his words about those different activities and games.
Sorting - In Sorting you get boxes and piles of buttons that must be sorted into the boxes. You have a minute to do as much as you can. As you sort the buttons and clear them off the screen the number of boxes and buttons you get will increase.
Counting - Here bugs appear on screen and you should tap the button that shows how many bugs are on screen. You can tap on the bugs to hear them counted out loud. What makes counting tricky is that the bugs are moving around on the screen.
Bees-Eye - This is a Bulls-eye-dart game with bees. You put bees in a slingshot and send them towards a flower. They hit the flower and bounce off, scoring points. The flower starts to move as you get to harder levels. If you miss too many bees you start a level over. Rocks also show up to block the bees.
Patterns - The patterns are a row of buttons in a certain order. One is missing from the pattern and you drag in the missing button.
Catch ‘em - To Catch ‘em you tap on bugs, as many as you can when they run across the screen. You have three levels to get through and the app times to see how long it takes you to finish. It saves your time and you can try to beat it the next time you play.
Tic-Tac Toe - This is regular Tic-Tac-Toe but you play against a bug. You put a button down and a dragon fly comes to place the buttons on the screen for the computer.
The additional games and activities include a matching game, letter train, more bug collection, memory games, sorting and sequencing activities and more. There is a great deal of content to Bugs and Buttons, I really feel like you get a “bang for your buck” with this app.
Thank you Mr. O. for breaking it all down for us. He was cute when he sat down with the app and went over everything for me. He would be giving me step by step instructions but then he’d get sucked into playing the activity and have to start his explanation over again. I asked him what he liked about Bugs and buttons and he told me “the pictures and the way the buttons and bugs look. I like the way the bugs move around the screen.” What didn’t you like?” was my follow up question. His answer? Nothing. That sums it all up right there!
As a point of reference Mr. O is seven years old and a first grader. I have no doubt younger children will thoroughly enjoy this app as well.
