It’s been awhile since I’ve reviewed an adult word game. Today I have one that can be played by all ages, here’s how it works. Your screen is filled with blocks of ice and each block has a letter on it. Using your finger you connect the blocks to form words. When you lift your finger the ice blocks that you’ve used in your word will crack and disappear. The app comes with four different game modes:
- Time Attack - In Time Attack you have 90 seconds to score as may points as possible by spelling words. As you crack the ice blocks they’ll quickly be replaced by new ones.
- Chill - Chill has no time limit, it’s perfect for play and practice. This is a great mode for the kids.
- Elimination - With Elimination you crack blocks and they aren’t replaced. You won’t earn points but your record at the end is determined by how many blocks remain. You’ll have 90 seconds to see what you can do. One of my favorite parts about the Elimination mode is that you can tilt your device so the blocks fall in another direction, opening up new word possibilities.
- Challenge- The Challenge mode features a series of levels. Each one presents a unique challenge that must be completed before the next level is unlocked.
To make things even more interesting some of the ice blocks have special powers. One will give you extra time, another extra points. My favorite is the block that blows up the other surrounding ice blocks. The game is Game Center enabled so you can compare your scores against those of your friends. What I like about ColdSpell is that it works for a wide range of ages and skill levels. It’s easy enough for children but can also prove challenging to adults. The no pressure Chill mode is a great addition for younger players or those like me who need practice spotting words longer than three letters. This was definitely a game that I enjoyed and will play again.

Although it’s not a word game, Iced In is also a cool game (pun intended) for folks who like puzzles.
