Now, this is an interesting and exciting app! Collins Big Cat: It Was a Cold, Dark Night Story Creator is not only a book – it is an app that allows children to create their own story! I loved the ingenuity of the idea of having children read a story and then be able to create their own version of the story or an entirely different story.
The storybook itself is very cute – it is the tale of Ned the hedgehog, who is looking for a home. On his journey, Ned meets many other animals and eventually finds his way home to his warm pile of leaves. Like many other apps, It Was a Cold, Dark Night has the options of “Read to Me” or “Read by Myself”. I should point out that in the “Read by Myself” option, you are able to actually record yourself reading the story; and there are three tracks available – so you could have each parent record one and the child record their own as well. On each page, there are animals and objects that you are able to interact with, and there is a hint button for those little ones who may need help. I loved the graphics and sound effects and thought that they fit the story nicely.
Once you have finished the story, you are able to take a quiz if you like to see what you remember from the story. I thought that this was great practice for older children to be able to test their memories. Also, as I mentioned before – once finishing the book you are able to create your own story using the “Story Creator” feature. The “Story Creator” consists of scenes, objects and characters from the story – you are able to place them in any order you like and resize and rotate them as well. After creating the pages for your story, you are able to add text. What a neat concept!
I really enjoyed Collins Big Cat: It Was a Cold, Dark Night Story Creator. I will definitely be reading this with my son in the future. I would recommend this app to those with little ones who like to read and who have creative imaginations.
