Colorama is a coloring book app that’s available for both the iPad and iPhone, albeit in different formats. For the iPhone the app is titled Colorama – Kids Coloring Book. With your purchase you’ll receive several coloring books that were included in the purchase price. These are groups of pictures that belong to a theme. Additional coloring books are available for in-app purchase but you’ll have plenty of pictures to begin with. To color a picture you select a book, give it a tap and watch It open like a coloring book so you’re ready to begin. Different shades of colored pencils are lined up along the bottom of the screen. Tap on one to select the color and then tap on the area of the picture you’d like filled in. That section will fill in with color which makes this a nice app for children who want to stay in the lines but aren’t able to do that on their own. As you are coloring your picture is automatically being saved. The app has an “Easel Screen” where your current picture is displayed on an easel. Next to that are three buttons to tap. One will save your picture to your camera roll, one will attach it to an email and one will delete the picture. These buttons are a great visual way to let children know what they can do.
Now for the iPad, and I have to say this version is my favorite out of the two. Part of that is because of the larger screen, coloring apps are just more fun when they’re bigger. The Colorama iPad apps are sold separately, there’s no in-app purchase here. You can choose from ABCs, Bugs and Masks. When you’ve opened one of the apps you’ll see the coloring pictures in a gallery. Thumbnails of the pictures line up across the screen and you must tap on the one that you’d like to color. When you’ve made your choice the picture appears, filling up all but a small part of the iPad screen. Nice and big. At the top of the screen are buttons that will allow you to email the picture, save it to your camera roll or print it. The print option actually gives you an email with a link to a full size image of your picture. You would open the email, open the link and then print your coloring page. Also at the top is a trash can and eraser, for when you’d like to start over. I just had a thought, if you wanted to you could email yourself blank Colorama pictures, print them out and then use them with good old fashioned crayons.
By far my favorite part of the Colorama iPad apps is the color choices. At the bottom of the screen you’re given a line of colored pencils with a much greater color selection than what was found in the iPhone app. The increase in colors is nice but the developers have also added patterns. When you select a color and then tap on the pattern button you’ll see different patterns, depending on which color you chose. Fantastic! Now when you tap on a section of the picture it fills in with the pattern. This is a fun way to really get colorful and creative with the coloring pictures. We’ve especially had fun trying this out with the ABCs pictures. These feature an alphabet letter hidden among objects that begin with the letter and it’s fun to get crazy with the details.
You can’t beat the price of the Colorama apps, all of them, iPhone and iPad are only $.99. You’ll need to pay additional $.99 for extra coloring books with the iPhone but that’s still a great deal for the quality of pictures you’re receiving.
