Cozmo’s Day Off is an interactive storybook from the folks behind Jack and the Beanstalk Children’s Interactive Storybook. I reviewed that app back in April, 2010 and found it to be a delight. Cozmo is a totally different type of tale but just as wonderful. Cozmo is an alien who’s having one of “those” days. He’s trying to get to work but nothing is going right. Cozmo’s troubles are told in rhyme and the illustrations are terrific and packed with plenty to look at. Within the illustrations are a variety of things to touch. You’ll have to tap everywhere in order to find them all. Some of them may even do something different the next time you tap, keeping the surprises coming. Several animations will only occur after you’ve triggered something else and there are also a few that start when you tilt the iPad. A few screen have activities hidden within, a puzzle, a memory game, an arcade type game. There are over 100 interactions in this app and each adds to the story experience.
Cozmo’s narration is also something special. A slide on the screen lets you adjust the speed of the narrator;s voice. A slight adjustment one way or the other and you’ll still have semi-normal narration. But move the slide much farther and you’ll be listening to a robot or a quick talking alien. Now here’s the really cool part. There is a very simple process for recording your own narration. Once you’ve done that you can adjust your recorded voice’s speed too. My kids are having a blast with this feature. I’ve been listening to them replay the same pages over and over again in different voices.
Cozmo’s Day Off lives up to, and in many ways exceeds, the standards set by Jack and the Beanstalk. From the illustrations and original story, to the sound effects and built in activities, this app is a winner from start to finish.
Cozmo’s Day Off is only available on the iPad.
