The movie Dead Poets Society was released for the first time ever on Blu-Ray last week and I can’t believe it’s been twenty-three years since it was originally released in theaters. That makes me feel very old! It has been digitally restored for this new edition but the story remains as powerful as ever. This is one of those movies that stays with you. I can’t think of Henry David Thoreau or A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream without thinking of scenes from this film.
The Blu-Ray has several bonus features including interview footage with the movie’s director Peter Weir and stars Ethan Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard. You’ll also find a lighting workshop with Cinematographer John Seale. Dead Poet’s Society has gorgeous cinematography (looks great in Blu-Ray!) and I think it’s interesting to learn how lighting plays into what you finally see on film. And what would bonus features be without audio commentary? You’ll find that here too, done by Director Peter Weir, Cinematographer John Seale and Writer Tom Schulman.
It was great to rediscover Dead Poets Society again and the movie looks and feels timeless in brand new Blu-Ray packaging!

Disclosure: Buena Vista Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of Dead Poets Society for review purposes.
