Disney Second Screen: Pirates of the Caribbean

This past weekend I had a chance to finally sit down, watch the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie and explore the accompanying Disney Second Screen app. How sad is it that I say “finally”? October has been one of those months and sitting down to do anything has become a complete luxury but Saturday night I got to put in the movie, sync up the app and escape with the pirates.
The app’s setup is the same as with the Second Screen:Lion King app that I reviewed earlier in the month. You play the Blu-Ray, start the app and then sync the two together. This can be done in one of three ways – over a wireless network, by audio sync or manually. After the app has synced up with the movie you’ll see a timeline on your iPad screen that moves along with the movie. This timeline provides a variety of extra content to enhance your movie viewing. There are photo galleries, VFX Labs, deleted scenes, bloopers and extra bits of information to fill in the story. If you stop to explore and get caught up in a photo gallery then it just takes one tap of a button to sync right back up to the movie again. You can also access this content via the app’s Index and Activities lists.
The Pirates of the Caribbean Second Screen app has a different feel from the Lion King app. Lion King worked for children and families alike, Pirates seems better for teens and adults. If you have the Blu-Ray disc I recommend checking the app out for the behind the scenes extras. I’m looking forward to seeing which Disney title gets the Second Screen treatment next. One thing to note, this app is rather large so make sure you have plenty of space free on your iPad.
