Can I just say how very cool Doodle Games is? It’s quirky and charming and I know my second and fifth grader are going to have a hard time putting it down. The app is a collection of paper and pencil games for your iPhone. The graphics are hand drawn and the text is all hand written. Just like you’d see on a pad of paper your child had been doodling on. There are five different Doodle Games to choose from.
Word Search – Crossword puzzles. With big words like hamburger and chemist and…wait for it…ratatouille. Yes, ratatouille. These words will keep your kids searching for awhile. Excellent!
Doodle Ships – Battleship without all the electronic hoopla. On this one you can choose to play against the app or another player. You can also choose from three different fleet sizes and three levels of difficulty.
Tic Tac Toe – Again you can choose to play against the app or another person. There are also three levels to try.
Dots Game – This is the classic where you try to connect dots to make squares but your opponent is also trying to do the same thing. It’s the paper and pencil game that keeps my kids quiet at church. Play against the app or a friend and choose the easy, medium or hard level. You can also choose the number of dots you want to connect. For more of a challenge (and a longer game) try jumbo.
Hangman – This was my favorite part of the Doodle Games app. The app comes up with the words and you guess the letters. If you get them wrong then the app draws the hangman for you, one piece at a time. Except it’s not always a hangman. I also saw a bomb, jack-in-the-box and a man on a teeter totter. Each time you guess the wrong letter something happens- the bomb fuse shortens, the jack-in-the-box handle turns or the man walks across the teeter totter. My favorite part of Hangman was the custom feature that lets you enter in your own word.
I think that Doodle Games gives you a lot of bang for your $1.99. I really liked the whole feel of the app. It’s completely opposite from the slick graphics and effects that you’ll see in some game apps, but I found it to be charming and simple yet completely entertaining for my kids.
