eScrap App

One of my favorite hobbies is digital scrapbooking. I enjoy putting together books and projects that document our family life and I enjoy doing it digitally because there’s no paper mess. I use Photoshop Elements and it’s taken a few years to get used to that product but it’s the one I keep coming back to. Last week I heard about the eScrap App from a Facebook friend. They had posted a page that they had created with the app and when I saw it I was intrigued by it’s digital scrapbooky look.

With the eScrap App you can create a scrapbook page from scratch or use a “quick page”. With a quick page all you’ll need to do is add in a photo and you’re good to go. If you want to create an original page you’ll be able to select from several backgrounds that the app offers. Each background has accompanying elements and alphabet letters. There is also a text tool that allows you to type your text and then customize it from different fonts, colors and sizes. Finally, there are colored filters which can be applied to your photos. Elements and the alphabet letters can be resized and moved around the screen but I couldn’t find a way to do this with the text that I added using the keyboard. I was also unable to rotate elements.

When your eScrap page is finished you’re able to share it with others. Sharing can be done via Twitter, Facebook or email. The pages can also be saved to your iPhone’s photo album. I have saved images to the Photo Album and then transferred them to my computer and uploaded them to Costco’s photo service. (This is the service that I use when I’m developing photos.) I haven’t printed them out yet but they look fine on my screen and came across as 4×6 size. To be honest, I’m not sure how they’ll look when printed out, once I’ve made it to Costco to pick up the photos I’ll update the review. The 4×6 size means you’re not going to be able to do a full sized scrapbook page, it would be nice to have that option.

I thought that the eScrap App did a fine job as a basic digital scrapbooking app. I liked the fact that backgrounds, elements and alphabet letters are tied together into groups. I also appreciated the quick pages, those are a big time saver. I think that the app could use a few more choices in backgrounds, perhaps themed sets (baby, travel, etc.) and users also need to have the ability to move text around the screen. But the potential is there and I’m looking forward to seeing where the app goes next.

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
