Finger Math

December 29, 2011

Today I have a math app that uses the finger counting method called “chisenbop“. This method lets you count all the way to 99 using your 10 fingers. You can also perform two-digit addition and subtraction problems with your two hands. The first time I used the Finger Math app I had no knowledge at all about chisenbop, I was a complete novice. From using the app’s tutorial and going through the first few levels I now have a solid understanding of the method and how to use it. I was truly surprised at how quickly I was able to catch on.

Finger Math explains the basics to the counting method and then becomes an interactive game. Children are given a problem and asked to “show” the answer using two virtual hands on the screen. As they put their fingers on the hands’ fingers the app reflects the numbers they are counting. When they reach the correct number a new problem is presented. As children work through the different problems they become progressively more difficult and new levels are unlocked.

Finger Math supports up to five users and there are sixty total levels. I found this to be a very helpful app and a brand new way of thinking about counting, addition and subtraction. My feeling is that the app has been very well done. The interactivity of the hands on the screen solidified the concepts and the counting tricks for me.

Chalk Walk is a very unique iPad app. It has been developed to help your children improve the pincer grip they use to hold a pencil.

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
