Last week I received an email from Duck Duck Moose letting me know they’d just released their first iPad app. My internal response was a combination of “Goody!” and “Hooray!” and “I’ll bet it looks fantastic!” because their past apps have been wonderful and a big hit at our house. So did Fish School live up to my expectations? It did, and then some because it’s unlike what Duck Duck Moose has done in the past. Fish School isn’t a reimagining of a song for an app. This is an interactive, learning app that is also a lot of fun. In Fish School the fish are at school and they’d like to teach you a few things. There are plenty of different activities, here’s the run down.
*Letters – As you swipe the screen the fish swim over and form an actual letter. You’ll hear the letter’s name spoken aloud and also see a picture of something that starts with the letter. My son loved watching the fish create the letters.
*Numbers – These fish are talented and smart! Not only do they swim in letter formation but they can do numbers too! Watch the bottom of the screen for things to count.
*Shapes – This might qualify them as overachievers but believe it or not the fish can also make shapes.
*ABC Song – In this section you listen to the ABC song and watch the letter forming fish swim across your screen.
*Colors – I liked this section and thought it was cute. Fish of different colors swim across your screen. Tap one and all the other fish swim away and are replaced by fish that match the color of the fish you tapped.
*Play – Fish swim across your screen and you can tap on them and drag them around the screen. If you tap and hold your finger in place the fish get bigger and bigger. My kids liked doing this to the puffer fish.
*Differences – Again, fish swim across your screen but this time you need to tap the one that is different. You’ll need to pay attention because it could be a different shape or size or color or even type of fish.
*Matching Game – The fish become memory game cards. Tap them and they’ll reveal another fish hidden behind. Your goal is to find all of the pairs of matching fish. I thought this game was clever.
There is plenty of content to this game and it’s all extremely well done. The graphics are sharp and look incredible on the iPad. The fish are adorable and that’s coming from someone who has strong, strong feelings of dislike for fish. I’m absolutely pleased with this iPad app. Another great job by Duck Duck Moose! Oh and the best part?? The app is only $1.99 which is a steal for the content and quality you’ll be getting.
*I tested out the iPad HD version of Fish School but there is also a version that is designed for the iPhone and it’s only $.99.
Price when Reviewed: $1.99
