Healthy Food Finder by Caloricious

September 9, 2010

The Healthy Food Finder by Caloricious lets you search a database for healthy foods. For example, you can type in Sugar Free Chocolate and the app pulls up a long list of products fitting that description. Products in this list can be sorted by relevance, calories: low to high or calories: high to low. I liked the option to sort the calories from low to high. If you see a product that you’re interested in you’ll want to tap on it’s name to see the product detail screen. This will tell you the product’s brand and should include a link to the brand’s website. You’ll also be able to view the nutrition label, additives and allergens in the product. Some products also have a “What’s Good and Bad” section that summarizes the pluses and minuses for the food.

In addition to searching for foods by keywords you can also browse through the Healthy Food Finder’s categories and subcategories. This is a great way to look for food ideas if you don’t know exactly what you want. The app allows you to add products to a shopping list but you must sign in to Facebook Connect to do this. I’m not exactly sure why, I signed in and was able to add products to my list but I’m not sure how Facebook fit into the process. Nothing showed up on my wall or newsfeed. At the website Caloricious.com you can create a user profile and view your shopping list. On the wbesite you can also search for foods and there are many resources about nutrition, allergies and various food issues.

The Healthy Food Finder was an easy app to understand and use. My two favorite features are the list sorting by calories and the “what’s good and bad” information about the food product. I don’t have any suggestions about design or navigation but I think it would be wonderful if more foods were added to the database.

Individual Text Tones for Contacts

My 9 year old daughter told me about an iOS 5 feature that I was totally unaware of until last week. Miss S. showed me how to set up individual text tones for my contacts.

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
