Hipstamatic

I’m a very boring photographer. My method is to point the camera, hope my kids don’t move and then shoot the picture. It documents our life but after awhile my photos all start to look the same. Since I got my iPhone 4 I’ve been using it to take most of my photos. It’s usually always close at hand and it takes fantastic pictures but because I’m still the one taking them they’re usually still boring. Several weeks ago I puchased the Hipstamatic app and it is currently my favorite app on my iPhone. You use it to take pictures and they’re immediately given a “retro” treatment. When you see the final product it will look like nothing you’d think possible from your iPhone.

Hipstamatic allows you to take pictures with a variety of “lenses”. Each lens will give photos their own look and feel. The app comes with three different lenses and two different flashes to use. There are also several different types of “film” that you can use. The different films will also create photos with a different look. Part of the fun is putting together the different film and lenses to see what you get. If you’d like more variety you can buy “Hipstapacks” through in-app purchases. Hipstapacks combine additional lenses, films and flashes.

Once you’ve taken a photo it is automatically saved to your iPhone’s photo library. You can also see the pictures in the Hipstamatic app and they can be stacked (grouped) together. Photos can be emailed out or directly uploaded to Facebook or Flicker. The only issue I’ve found is that when I plug in my iPhone the preview of my photos don’t show up in iPhoto on my Mac. I can see where they should be but no images. However, when I import the “empty” square the photo does import and I can see it without any problems. I’m also able to email the photos to myself and add them to iPhoto without any problems.

I absolutely love the look that Hipstamatic gives my photos. When I’m done they look like someone besides me took them which is a wonderfully, not boring thing!

I haven’t picked up this one but I grabbed their Incredibooth while sitting at my niece’s birthday part last week. It turned out to be kind of fun to capture folks like you would in the old style photo booth. We preferred the black and white, but there are two additional lenses that appear similar to some of the Hipstamatic app samples.

The kids like playing with Photo Booth on the Mac. Maybe Apple with bring it to iPhone, too.

I like Hipstamatic, but I wish it would save the original photo (non processed) too. Another (similar) app that I really like, is ShakeitPhoto. Applies a “poloroid” effect to the photos – but it also saves the original too. Also – you can apply the effect to a photo you already took and have in your camera roll. You should give it a try it you’re playing with camera apps.

I’ll have to try that one out….I’ll be reviewing “lo-mob” later in the week. It also gives the photos a vintage feel but it works off photos you’ve already taken so you have both the original and the new version too.

Photo Booth is a big hit at our house and would make a fantastic app. I’ll have to take a look at Incredibooth.

I LOVE Hipstamatic, I’ve debated upgrading to some of the other features. My sister just got an iPhone, so we took some great cabin vacation shots of the kids with this feature.

What do you think???

Individual Text Tones for Contacts

My 9 year old daughter told me about an iOS 5 feature that I was totally unaware of until last week. Miss S. showed me how to set up individual text tones for my contacts.

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
