iBirth is described as a “childbirth class in a nutshell” and that’s exactly what it is. It takes the information you’d learn at a childbirth class and puts it onto your iPhone. The app is divided into three sections – videos, prenatal nutrition and tips and lists. The videos section features twenty-one videos that showcase the different positions for labor. The videos are broken up into four categories – 1st Stage Labor – Active, 1st Stage Labor – Resting, Back Labor and 2nd Stage Labor. Each video provides an explanation and demonstration of how to use the position to aid your labor. The nutrition section provides excellent information about the best foods to eat while pregnant. It gives you the recommended daily allowance for the nutrients that are essential in pregnancy. Tap on one of the nutrients and you’ll see a description of how it benefits baby and mom. There will also be a list of foods that contain the nutrient, along with the amount that they contain. This is a great resource if you’re having a hard time figuring out what’s best to eat during those long nice months. Finally, the tips and lists section is just that – a focus on different tips and lists that can help with your childbirth experience.

If you are expecting for the first time or need a refresher course, iBirth is an excellent resource. I only took a childbirth class once, when I was pregnant with my first child. Looking back I probably could have used some sort of refresher for the next three but I was always too busy to commit to a class. I would have loved having iBirth because I could have watched the videos and read the information on my own time.  One suggestion that I would have for iBirth is to include a section on medications for labor. I know that many people choose to have a natural childbirth experience but there are also many that are unable to do this, or choose not to. The medication options were covered in the childbirth class I took many moons ago and I think the information would be a nice addition to an already terrific app.

WebMD Baby

WebMD Baby was released earlier this month and it is awesome! Seriously one of the best “baby” apps I’ve seen to date

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
