One of the places that I have always wanted to visit is the Crayola crayon factory. I think it’d be fascinating to visit and watch how they mix their colors and create those beautiful crayons. There’s something about the look and smell of a brand new box of crayons that always makes me smile. They are hard to resist when the back to school sales hit in the fall. I’m pretty partial to the real thing so I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect when I tried out iCrayonMaker. I knew there’d be no smell of hot wax, but also no danger of getting burned. When I opened the app I discovered my kids had already beat me to the app. They’ve been creating and saving iCrayons and drawing pictures for a few week now.
iCrayonMaker provides eleven basic colors that you can combine to create your own unique crayon color. You decide how much of each shade you’d like to add and when enough is enough. When the color is just right you can save it and then immediately pull it up later on. Once you have your perfect color it’s time to draw. iCrayonMaker lets you use your color as a crayon, chalk, glitter or a felt marker. Each one will give you a different look for the lines on the screen. Your drawings may be saved to your camera roll, sent to Facebook or emailed out.
I think the concept and creativity of iCrayonMaker are unique. Now anyone can make their own crayons without a nasty mess. My only suggestions for the app are to enlarge the drawing space, add more starting colors and a way to undo color changes in the crayon maker. It would be nice to be able to go back one or two color additions without having to start from scratch again.
A trial version of iCrayonMaker is available for free in the App Store.
