iPhone 4 Thoughts

June 8, 2010

So there was much ado about the new iPhone 4 yesterday. I have to admit that I found myself caught up in some excitement over several of the phone’s new features. The HD video capability sounds terrific. We’ve got a Flip Mino that we use now but one less device to throw in my purse for school events is always a good thing. The Netflix app got me very excited. Netflix’s Instant Queue is just about the greatest thing since sliced bread in our house. We’ve been watching those movies over the xBox but I’m thrilled to get them on my iPhone too. Also, iBooks on the iPhone sounded good but when I heard you could share books between devices that hooked me. I love the idea of being able to start a book on the iPad and then pick up right where I left off when I’m killing time in the car at the bus stop. Hopefully the selection will start to catch up to the Kindle. It will be nice to have flash on the camera and “tap to focus” will be helpful too. My screens cannot wait for the app folders! It will be lovely to have things organized so I don’t have to go swiping through screen after screen looking for an app. And an increase in battery life isn’t too shabby either.

We’ve held onto our iPhone 3G models and didn’t upgrade to the 3GS last year. We’re eligible for upgrade status and I’m thinking it’s about time to try out a new phone and convert my trusty 3G into an iPod Touch for my kids. What about you?? Anyone else been holding out for this latest version of the iPhone? What new features (from either the phone or the OS) are you excited about?

We did not hop on the iPhone wagon until the 3GS. My wife is not itching to change, but since ATT says I am eligible for the upgrade, I am considering upgrading. My 3GS will go to one of my girls as an iPod. We got lucky and picked up a barely used 3G for $100 which is currently shared as their iPod between the two. On that note, I have been extremely satisfied with the Otterbox Defender case. Otherwise, I would likely never let my iPhone leave my caring hands. It pretty much seals off the device except for the mic and speaker. The downside of the case that seems the largest detractor for reviewers is the integrated screen protector and the “bubbling” effect. The pros far outweigh that for me, and the kids don’t seem to mind. It will be a shame to put a version of the case, when one is offered, on the iPhone 4, but I know it will keep it safe.

Can’t wait for iPhone 4. I got the 3G as a birthday gift a couple years ago and like you did not upgrade to the 3GS, since mine was working fine. Now I am just starting to have some issues with the cable connection being loose which makes syncing difficult. I think the dual sided cameras will be fun and look forward to having flash. I rarely carry a regular camera so my kid’s life is largely documented with the iPhone. Also, the 4 looks beautiful!

Marla – Interesting to hear about your syncing problems. One of our cables came almost completely apart. My speakers have also been having problems too so I’m missing calls. Do I sound like I’m trying to convince myself I need an upgrade or what! :-D

A friend of mine mentioned that if I dropped my 3G from a great distance, I’ll DEFINITELY need a new iPhone!

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
