iPhone OS 3.1 – Trouble with a capital T

Like the eager beaver that I am I couldn’t wait to install the new OS 3.1. I was all anticipation over the new update until I got to the very end of the install and was told there’d been an “error”. Then I was told my iPhone was in “Restore” mode and wouldn’t be recognized until it was fixed. Huh???? Restore? That is not a word I want used to describe my phone and so I did a quick internet search to see if anyone else had dealt with this problem. Didn’t have much luck finding an answer so I had to pull the trigger and click the restore button in iTunes, setting my iPhone back to it’s original settings. The entire time that the restoration was going on I was thinking about all the data that’d be lost, apps I’d have to restore and contacts to be re-entered. Thinking, this blankety-blank download is going to cause me a big fat pain in the neck. Eventually my iPhone showed back up in iTunes. Next I had the choice to either set it up as a new iPhone or restore it to the last previous backup for the phone. Which THANKFULLY had happened at a sync I’d done only an hour earlier. But it took a long, long time to get everything back to where it was originally.
So in the end, I got my iPhone back the way it was pre-update, but it took MUCH longer then it should have. My husband had absolutely no trouble installing OS 3.1 on his iPhone earlier in the day. Don’t know what went wrong for me. My advice is be prepared and make sure your iPhone syncs and backs up before you attempt to install the new OS. Don’t think you’ll be in and out with a quick update, downloading the new version took quite some time on it’s own. Add that to the lengthy installation process I experienced and I’ve been sitting here for too long tonight.
