iPhone Ringtones – duplications and a fix

Tonight I finally had a chance to sit down and create more ringtones for my phone. It was fun going through my iTunes library, trying to find the right song for the right person. All was going smoothly until I dragged them over onto my phone and a funny thing happened. I got a duplicate of my first ringtone. I tried adding another and soon I had three copies of the same ringtone. I did what I could (deleting them all and then trying again) but it kept happening over and over. So I turned to google and did a search for "duplicate ringtones on iPhone" and what do you know – lots of other people have run into the same issue. I tried a few suggestions, things people swore would work. None of them worked for me. Finally I found the following site and it did the trick.

A word of caution -if you follow this tip, you will delete all of your movies, tv shows and music from your iPhone. You’ll then have to go back and add everything from your library again. (Small miracle though, your apps won’t go anywhere.) Tonight I was willing to deal with that hassle just to get the stupid ringtones on my phone. Once the ringtones were on my phone I went back to iTunes and reset my phone to manually manage my music and videos. I like to manage it this way because I’ve got tons of kid music in my iTunes library and I don’t want to automatically sync the Camp Rock CD to my phone every time I plug it into the computer.
I did do one smart thing tonight. Before I synced the ringtones I made sure I’d created all the ones I’d possibly want for awhile. This way I should be set and not have to go through the whole delete and restore process again. I think it’s going to be worth it the next time my mom calls and my phone starts singing Abba’s "Mamma Mia".
