Kids at Home

Learning to speak is likely one of the most difficult, yet rewarding things that we will ever do. My son is 15 months old, and while his vocabulary is still limited, it is growing every day. Kids at Home is a neat app that could be an excellent learning tool for those little ones who are learning to speak and learning the names of objects, particularly those objects found around the home. There are five main areas of the home that can be explored – bedroom, kid’s room, bathroom, kitchen and living room. In each room, you are able to touch items and hear what they are called, such as toys you might find in a kid’s room (dolls, trucks, etc.) or items you might find in a fridge (milk, cheese, etc.). Another interactive feature of the app is the ability to select a person or animal in the top corner and see what they do in the room – touch on the kids to see them play catch in their room or touch the dog to see him jump on the couch (this is great because it tells your child what the action verb is – i.e. “jumping”). You may even see some animals doing things you would not expect to see in a home, like a pig running through the living room, which adds a fun aspect for the kids playing with the app. I should mention that there are 99 words taught in this app – so it can definitely help broaden vocabulary.
I really enjoyed this app and feel that it would be a great learning tool for kids who are learning how to speak and learning the names of objects in their home. Many of the objects taught in the app are universal and found in every day life which is very useful. I know that my son and I will have fun learning words together and I look forward to the days ahead when he will point and tell me the names of things.
