Kids Beads

January 20, 2012

Oh my goodness! Miss J., my 2 1/2 year old, is obsessed with Kids Beads. I have been hearing the music for this app ALL the time since it went on my iPhone. Kids Beads is a beading app that is very easy to use but at the same time it offers plenty of variety which will keep older children engaged. Here’s how it works. First you pick a colored jar. Tap on it and it shoots beads of that color onto the screen. The beads will be all shapes, sizes and styles. Now you simply tap the bead you want with your finger and drag it to the top of the screen where a glowing circle shines at the top of a bead string. Let your finger go and the bead drops onto the string. Repeat this with as many beads as you like to create your necklace. You can change the color of your beads at any time by tapping on another jar.

Once your necklace is complete it’s time to see how it looks on the models. There are four to choose from and after you tap their image at the top of the screen they will appear wearing your finished necklace. Miss J. likes to switch them out so she can see how each girl looks. My older girls have also spent time with the app and (as I expected) they focused more on creating patterns with their beads. I think that is one of the great things about Kids Beads, it can be used by a variety of ages. The toddler just wants to see her beads on a string but the 9 year old wants to create an elaborate, repeating pattern. Everybody’s happy.

I only have one quibble with Kids Beads and that is the volume of the music that plays at the app’s opening and when the models are wearing their necklaces. It seems a bit too loud to me and I’d like to see an option where you can turn it down if you like. It’s such a minor detail though because overall this is a wonderful app. Plus, whenever I hear the music start up I know Miss J. will be occupied for awhile creating beautiful necklaces!

Individual Text Tones for Contacts

My 9 year old daughter told me about an iOS 5 feature that I was totally unaware of until last week. Miss S. showed me how to set up individual text tones for my contacts.

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
