Kids in Mind iPhone App – Movie Reviews for Families

March 8, 2011

As I’m writing this review I am wondering why I haven’t had Kids in Mind on my iPhone before! This is an app that I would recommend for every parent with a child who goes to the movies or watches videos. If you’re concerned about what your children are watching then this app is a MUST. Kids in Mind doesn’t assign ratings based on age, instead they rate Sex/Nudity, Violence/Gore and Profanity on a scale of 1 to 10. They don’t make any judgements about whether or not a movie is good or bad. Instead they provide detailed information about what you can expect to see in the way of sex, nudity, violence, substance abuse, etc. I couldn’t believe how detailed the information was. Reading through it all was an eye opener and having this information makes it very easy for me to say no to certain movies.

The Kids in Mind reviews appear in order theatrical release dates. At a glance you can see the movie’s release date, length, Kid’s in Mind ratings and the MPAA Rating (G, PG, etc.). When you tap on a movie title you’ll be able to read a plot summary and the detailed information about what you’ll find in the previously mentioned areas. In addition to that there is a list of discussion topics that might come up with your children after you watch the movie. I liked seeing a one sentence summary of the film’s message at the very end of it all. Links to the film’s website and IMDb are also included. You’ll feel very informed walking into the movie theater after you’ve been through all the information.

Kids in Mind also features reviews for movies that are “New to Video”. They have the same information and follow the same format as the recent theatrical releases. An archive lists previously reviewed movies in alphabetical order and there is also a separate search screen. When you search you can do it by movie title or actor. You can also search by ratings and pull up movies that fall within your set limits.

There are two Kids in Mind apps in the App Store – Pro and a free version. The free version will give you sixty days worth of free reviews. The pro version gives you a year’s worth and after that you may purchase an additional year with an in-app purchase. I can’t say enough positive things about what a tremendous resource this is for families. No covering ears, closing eyes or hoping the joke went over their head for us.

If you’re unsure about whether or not you’d like to spend the $1.99 for Kids in Mind Pro then you must try out the free version.

Price when Reviewed: Free or $1.99

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
