Ladybird Classic Me Books

September 28, 2011

The Ladybird Classic Me books were recently brought to the App Store with the Me Book Reader. Fourteen of the classic Ladybird Books have been transformed into book apps. The app comes with The Zoo and additional titles can be downloaded through in-app purchase. Available titles include The Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Gingerbread Man, Chicken Little, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and more. I’m sure that I read some of these books as a child, they certainly look familiar. I love the vintage look to the illustrations and the simple text is perfect for early readers.

How do the books translate as an app? The developers have kept the classic feel of the book while updating them in an innovative way. I tried out The Zoo and it was a great experience. First, the story is narrated and it comes with hotspots. These are spots on the screen that you can touch for narration or sound effects. With The Zoo it is animal noises in addition to the narration. The great thing that has been added to the Me Books is the addition of personalized hotspots. You can draw anywhere on the screen to create a hotspot then hold it down and record your own sound effects or narration. I did this throughout the book and it was a treat to leave little surprises for my kids. I thought it was a fantastic way to modernize the stories.

Chalk Walk

Chalk Walk is a very unique iPad app. It has been developed to help your children improve the pincer grip they use to hold a pencil.

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
