MailTones is an app for those wishing to cut through their email clutter. The app works by allowing you to assign custom sounds to various emails. You can assign for different contacts, subjects and senders. Assign the sound and when an email comes in matching that parameter you’ll receive a push notification on your phone, alerting you with the sound you chose. There are over 60 tones to choose from as well as a “Do Not Disturb” feature that can be automatically set up for evenings.
So how does MailTones work? In order to use the app’s features you set up email forwarding where a copy of your messages are forwarded over to MailTones. You can do this with all of your messages or only some of them. It’s when your emails arrive at the MailTones server that they are able to send back the push notification with the special sound. My one concern with the app was about forwarding my emails and giving out my (and inadvertently other’s) information to spammers. But I checked with MailTones and they tell me spam is not an issue. There is also a privacy policy listed in the App Store description stating no employees or third parties have access to the emails.
I think using an app like this could be a real time saver as it allows you to quickly identify your important emails. My advice is to read the MailTones’ description closely, make sure it works with your email provider and then decide if you’re comfortable with the method in which it works. If you are then go for it and let us know your experience!
