Math Blaster HyperBlast

June 2, 2011

Math Blaster HyperBlast comes from Knowledge Adventure, the company behind the popular JumpStart educational titles. In this game you play as a Cadet on a Math adventure. Riding on a HyperCycle you travel through tunnels, avoiding and shooting up obstacles. Along the way you’ll be collecting points and coming closer to alien robot blockades. In order to pass a blockade you must solve Math problems. You can choose whether the blockade problems will involve addition, subtraction, multiplication or division problems. For an extra challenge you can mix them together. You’ll also be able to choose your Math level and the numbers involved in your problems.

Math Blaster HyperBlast features great sound effects and the graphics look fantastic, like a video game. I usually don’t do well with games that require me to steer and shoot things at the same time but I had some actual success with this one. You steer by tilting your device and shoot by tapping on the screen. It took me a little bit of practice but children who are used to video games will have no trouble at all. The fast pace of the tunnels and obstacles adds excitement to the game and breaks up the Math practice. If anything I’d suggest slightly shorter tunnels and more robot blockades and Math problems.

We enjoyed Math Blaster HyperBlast and I think it does a nice job reaching out to boys who need a game that will keep them engaged in Math. Girls will enjoy it too but I think the space blasting will be especially appealing to boys. At least that’s the way it shook out at my house.

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
