Math Plus Minus – Arithmetic

Math Plus Minus is a new app from the developer of Tap Times Table, an app I featured on the site in November. pcklSoft has taken the foundation of Tap Times Table and used it to build this new Math app but they’ve tailored it for addition and subtraction. They’ve also made a few minor tweaks here and there and I think they’ve come away with an improved app. You (or your child) decides how many questions you’ll be asked and what the biggest number is that will be added or subtracted. You will also decide if answers may include negatives and if the game may be timed. The number of questions goes all the way to 100 as does the number that can be added and subtracted. When it’s time to play the main game children are given a simple arithmetic problem. Four bubbles with answers are pumped onto the screen and children must tap the correct answer. If they choose correctly acorns fall from the sky and begin to pile up underneath the squirrels on the screen. If they answer incorrectly then the bubble they tapped is removed from the possible answers. Children will be working to earn enough acorns to create a large stash underneath the squirrels. At the end of the question set players can see a summary of how well they have done.
In addition to the regular game Math Plus Minus also has a challenge mode. The challenge mode presents an arithmetic question but part of the question is missing. It will look something like this. 5 – ? = 2. A number of answer bubbles are floating on screen and children must tap the bubble with the correct answer. When they are right the bubble disappears and they are given the next challenge question. This continues on until they have cleared all the bubbles.
I’m happy with the direction Math Plus Minus took. I like the way the acorns are awarded here and I don’t miss the catapult that was featured in the Tap Times Table app. I think this feels more streamlined and better suited for younger children.
