Measure It!

Measure it! is an interesting app that I’m finally getting the hang of using. It allows you to take a picture of something and get an estimate of the object’s length. You do this using objects and scaling them to a size that’s relative to what you want to measure. I’ve reread that sentence and I think I’ve even confused myself. Let me try again. Open up the app and choose a picture from your camera roll or take a new picture with your phone. Now you’ll be asked to choose one of six objects – marble, tennis ball, basketball, car, school bus or airplane. The object will appear on your photo and you’ll use your fingers to scale the item until it’s a relative size to the object in the picture that you want to measure. That’s key…it’s got to be relative to the object in your picture. So if I was measuring my van I wouldn’t choose a basketball and then scale it so it showed up the same size as my car in the picture. Once you have the object scaled you’ll be asked to trace the length of what you want measured in the photo. A tape measure appears on the screen and unrolls as you trace your finger. There’s a nifty tape measure sound effect too. When you’ve traced the object an estimated length will appear at the top right of the screen. You can then save the photo so you’ll have a record of the measurement.
There have been times when I could have used an app like Measure it! Usually it’s when I’m in the store and I’m looking at something and trying to visualize it’s size. It’s amazing how you can’t remember what twelve inches looks like when you’re in a busy store and have kids climbing in and out of your shopping cart. Somewhere in my home are two tiny tape measures that belong in my purse. Tape measures I bought for measuring things when I’m out and about. But my kids have “borrowed” them to measure items around the house like Hot Wheels and Littlest Pet Shops and the dog, which means I’m constantly unable to find them. Now I can give Measure it! a whirl when I’m out and about and I’m not going to tell my kids what it does because I don’t want my phone walking off too.
