Monster ABC

Monster ABC fascinated my son because he’d never given much thought to monsters needing to know their letters or how to read. But they do. Anyone who’s seen Sesame Street knows that. This is a cute app that would appeal to little boys (or monster loving little girls too). Your child chooses from the Words or Letters game.

In Letters the monster will go through the alphabet letter by letter.  If they swipe their finger at the top of the screen, across the letters, the letters will slide from right to left. If they swipe from left to right the letters will slide backwards. Swipe fast and the letters slide quickly, stopping several letters down the line. Swipe slowly and you’ll go from one letter to the next. When the letters stop the monster will say the name of the letter in the middle. (If you keep swiping you can make the monster say letter after letter. Good for four year old entertainment.) A picture of an object also appears. Tap the object and a little boy says the sound of the letter and the name of the object.

In the Words section your child has to fill in missing letters to make words. For example, they’ll see a picture of a rug and next to it will be _ug. At the top of the screen will be three letters and they need to choose the correct one to fill in the blank. If they tap the wrong letter the monster says something that sounds an awful lot like “Ungh”. If they tap the right one the little boy says the letter sound and then the name of the object.

Right now they’re offering a free PC/Mac version of the Monster ABC with the next update. When I was little the only monsters I knew who knew their ABCs were on Sesame Street. Times sure have changed.

WebMD Baby

WebMD Baby was released earlier this month and it is awesome! Seriously one of the best “baby” apps I’ve seen to date

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
