Motion Math: Hungry Fish

Motion Math has done it again! They’ve released another fantastic Math game that works “outside the box” of flashcards, timed tests and traditional exercises. I’ve been very impressed with their past apps, Motion Math and Motion Math Zoom. This new title is no exception.
Hungry Fish focuses on mental math. The idea is simple, you are responsible for feeding a fish and he is….hungry. What do you feed him? Numbers of course! Not just any numbers though. Your fish will display different numbers on his side and that is the number you need to feed him. Sounds good, but where do these numbers come from? Helpful sea plants (anemones perhaps?) pump out numbers and you take those and drag the matching number to your fish. When you find the correct one he opens his mouth and swallows it up. Sounds easy but here’s the trick. You’re not always going to be given the exact, matching number. More often then not you’re going to be given several numbers that together would add up to that number. By dragging the numbers onto each other you can combine them to get the needed number and feed your fish. Now while all of this is going on your fish is on the move. He doesn’t sit still, this fish swims, dives and turns around the screen just like a real fish would. When the numbers start crowding the screen and the fish is swimming around it can get tricky to find the correct sums but that is part of the challenge, and it makes the app fun. Who wants to feed a fish that just sits there?
As you successfully feed your fish you will unlock special colors and fins. After a few levels you’ll be on your way to “tricking” out your fish just the way you like it. I’m not one to sit and play with Math apps for longer than I have to but Hungry Fish had me hooked as I was preparing for this review. Okay, that was an unintentional pun but the sentiment is perfect. The app works for a wide range of ages and is an entertaining alternative to worksheets. I highly recommend this app. Well done Motion Math!
