Is Friday night your movie night? At our house we have a movie night about twice a year, it just isn’t a regular thing. This is mostly because my husband and I don’t have the same taste in films and it’s so expensive to buy tickets and pay for a babysitter for four children. My rambling point is that I’m not sure if we’re normal or abnormal when it comes to the movies but this app, Movie Night Out, is for all of you who get out to the theater. It makes me want to be one of those people and now that I’ve got a daughter old enough to babysit I think we might be using it more often.
There are a variety of different things you can do with Movie Night Out. I’m going to touch on a few of the key points.
- Nearby & Now - This feature displays a list of movies. You can see movies that are starting within 45 minutes around you, those that are coming soon and those that are currently showing in theaters near your current location.
- Movie Filter - You can filter movies based on their rating, genre, box office ranking and more.
- Rate & Review - In Rate & Review you will pick a movie, quickly rate it and write a review. Your review can be shared on both Twitter and Facebook.
- Plan a Night – With “Plan a Night” you can tell the app what type of an evening you’d like to have. Family night? Funny night? Action night? Based on your answer Movie Night Out recommends a movie. Once you’ve found a movie you like then you can lock that down. In addition to movie selections you can also plan activities like dessert or live music. Something to round out your evening. The app then suggests local activities (via Citysearch) that meet your requests.
- Movie Check In - This feature lets you “check in” for both a theater and movie.
- My Scene - My Scene will display the movies you have rated, those you have added to a “must see” list, your favorite theaters and more.
Let’s go back to the part in the app when you’ve selected a movie that you’d like to see. On that screen you’re going to find some great information including the movie’s rating, running time, box office ranking, user and critic rating. There will also be a short plot synopsis. Trailers, videos and photos are available as well as information about the movie’s cast. Where available you can see reviews left by Facebook friends and Movie Night Out users. If you like what you see then there are several things you can do directly from this scene. You can add the movie to a “must see” list or plan your movie night. (See above) If you’d like to go with friends then you can use Facebook to invite them out to a show. If your movie is playing at a theater that uses Fandango then you can go ahead and purchase your tickets through the app. I’m a big fan of Fandango, I can’t remember the last time I used an actual box office.
Movie Night Out is a pretty slick app that’s loaded up with a great deal of information. It froze up on me several times so I need to try deleting and then reinstalling the app to see if that fixes the problem. Overall I was happy with the app. It was nice to have information for all of the local theaters in one spot and the Plan a Night feature is a fun touch.
