My Haiti: Gabou’s Story is one of a series of e-book’s that focus on children around the world. The children’s stories are presented in photographs and narration that describe what their daily lives are like. I previewed the story of Gabou, a little girl living in Haiti. The story follows her throughout her day and documents her life with her family. The photographs are bright and engaging and the text and narration are easy to follow and appropriate for children. The app can be read and listened to in English, Dutch or French. You can also turn the narration off and read the story to yourself. When you’ve finished Gabou’s Story you can learn fun facts about Haiti and also how to pronounce Kreyol words and phrases. One of my favorite parts of the app was the “Tell me about yourself” section. This section contains questions that give children a chance to think about how their daily lives might be similar to, or different from, Gabou’s. I enjoyed reading this story and learning more about Haiti and I appreciate having the chance to teach my children a little bit about another part of the world.
My Haiti: Gabou’s Story was created by Anne Glick. She tells me that Gabou and Valdo (featured in another story) and their families survived the recent earthquake in Haiti. All of the profits from the My Haiti e-books go to support programs for children in Haiti. You can read more about this at her website www.oneglobekids.com.
I tried out Gabou’s Story in HD on the iPad but it’s also available as an iPhone app. I have a promo code for the iPhone app and two promo codes for My Haiti: Valdo’s Story. One is for the HD iPad version, the other for the iPhone app. If you’re interested in winning a promo code please leave me a comment and let me know which app you’d like to try. I’ll be picking random winners on Friday evening. (Promo codes only available in the US App Store.)
