My Word Wall is a solid app for early readers. It has six activities that focus on learning to read simple words. Here is a quick look at each.
- Writing ABC - In this activity your child selects a letter. They will then drag and drop the letter from the top of the screen to the bottom. Once they’ve done this they’ll hear the name of the letter and the sound it makes. They will also hear the name of something that starts with this letter and they’ll see a picture of the object.
- Writing Words - Here your child chooses a “word family”. This is a word ending like am, ed, og, etc. They’ll drag and drop the letters to make the ending and then the app will sound it out for them. After they’ve got the ending ready they’ll be asked to choose a consonant for the beginning of the word. After they have dragged down a letter to create a simple word the app says a sentence using the word and shows a picture illustration.
- See & Find - This is a Memory game where half the cards display a picture and half show the matching words. To win the game you must find the cards that go together.
- Hide a Word - In this activity your child uses their finger to move a spotlight on the screen. When the spotlight hits a word the app uses it’s name in a sentence and displays a picture.
- Bubble Words - Your child is shown a picture and underneath the picture will be spaces, enough to spell out the name of the object. Floating on screen will be bubbles filled with letters. It’s your child’s job to take the bubbles with the correct letters and drag them to the spaces, spelling out the word.
- Jigsaw Word - Jigsaw Word shows a simple word with an illustration but they are broken up into three pieces. Your child must put the puzzle together to spell the word.
After your child completes ten exercises in each activity they’ll earn a sticker. Stickers can be played with on their word wall which is accessed from the home screen. On the wall children will also find words that they have unlocked while doing the activities. These can also be placed on the wall and used to make sentences. The wall background can be changed and a photo can be saved.
My Word Wall does a nice job covering simple words and I think you get a decent bang for your buck at $.99.
