Old Macdonald Piano comes from Kiboomu, the developers behind Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Preschool Storybook Piano. They’ve taken the same format and created a fantastic app using Old Macdonald as the new song.
There are four different modes to Old MacDonald Piano. In every mode you will see ten piano keys at the bottom of the screen. Above that will be a set of buttons. “Back” takes you back to the main screen. “Start” begins the song, “Record” begins recording your performance and “Playback” lets you hear yourself. There is also a button with a small white keyboard on it. If you tap that button you’ll be shown different instrument options. Tap on one to change the sound the keys will make when you play them. Those are features that are the same in each game mode now here’s an overview of what you’ll find in each mode.
Play and Sing Along - In this mode an animated version of Old MacDonald scrolls across the top of the screen. Old MacDonald begins the day on his farm, singing and collecting his animals as he goes. The keys on the piano that light up as they play the notes. You can tap on them to play along. In this version Old MacDonald is a funny farmer and the song is full of cute comments that he makes while cruising along on his tractor.
Learn the Song - In Learn the Song mode the music for Old MacDonald scrolls across the top of the screen. As each note is played it will highlight, the letter of the note will appear above the music and the correct piano key will light up. This is the mode where you can learn the notes to the song.
Karaoke Mode - Here the words to Old MacDonald appear at the top of the screen. They are highlighted as are the keys on the piano but no singing is heard from the app. There is accompaniment music but you must play the piano and sing the lyrics.
Freestyle Mode - Freestyle combines the animation from the Play and Sing Along mode with the lyrics from Karaoke Mode. No notes appear on the screen and the piano keys will not light up, you can play whatever you wish.
Old MacDonald Piano is a perfect app for preschoolers who want to play the piano, sing and record themselves doing all of the above. I think the four different game modes are a fantastic idea and the record/playback feature makes this one a hit in my house.
