Peekaboo Barn

Many moons ago I tried out Peekaboo Barn Lite and I was not a fan. I thought the app was cute but only getting three animals was a turnoff for me. So I am very happy to report that I really, really like the full version of Peekaboo Barn. This version includes many animals and having more is worth paying the full price for the app. The concept is simple, a red barn appears on the screen and starts to shake. Animals are a movin’ around in there. Listen for the animal noises and try to guess who’s hiding inside. Tap on the barn and you’ll find out which animal it is. An adorable child’s voice then says the name of the animal and it’s also written on the screen. Now tap on the screen to do it all over again with a new animal. In the app’s settings you can switch from English to Spanish and you can turn off the voice and animal noises. You can also switch from “regular” to “looped” mode. Here’s the difference as we experienced it at the iPhone mom’s house. In regular mode you go through all ten animals and then they end up in the barn together. The screen switches to a night scene and you can open the barn one more time to see the animals sleeping. In the looped mode the animals will cycle through over and over, but in random order. So how they appear the first time through won’t be the same order they come the next time. With the regular mode the animals are in the same order each time.
After playing with the full version I can see why Peekaboo Barn has been so popular, made it’s way onto all sorts of lists and been downloaded over and over. It’s a great one for your older babies and toddlers!
**Update 1/9/11 - My baby is now 18 months old and completely enamored with this app. I’d definitely rank it as a must have for toddlers.

Peekaboo Wild
Peekaboo Wild is the sequel to Peekaboo Barn that was just released in October. It follows the same great format but features animals from the African Savannah. They’re hiding behind some very tall grass. You’ll hear them making noises, guess which animal it is and then tap the screen. The grass disappears and you’ll see the animal. Another adorable child’s voice tells you what the animal is and you’ll see the name written on the screen. The narration on this app made me smile. When you’ve gone through all ten animal they’ll all be hiding behind the grass together. The screen will change to a night scene and you’ll find the animals sleeping behind the grass. It’s the same format as Peekaboo Barn and you can change the settings in the same way. Switching from “regular” to “looped” mode shuffles the animals around and presents them in a different order.
If you’ve already fallen in love with Peekaboo Barn then Peekaboo Wild is a great addition to your iPhone. I can’t choose which one I like best because they’re both fantastic. So choose the one that features the animals your child likes best or choose both. If you’ve got an older baby or toddler I don’t think you’ll be sorry.
