A little while ago I did a review of Toontastic. My children absolutely love that app and our iPad’s memory has been overtaken by their cartoons. This week I have a similar app to tell you about – PhotoPuppet HD. PhotoPuppet HD will allow you to make your own puppets and create detailed, animated films. I love Toontastic for children because it teaches story elements and is extremely easy to use but PhotoPuppet HD is going to provide the next step up for older users.
With PhotoPuppet HD you can create your own puppets from images in your iPad photo gallery. You can also use puppets provided by the app or take their puppets and add in your heads, there are endless possibilities. You can even build your puppets out of different pieces that are separately animated. Several different types of animation are supported by the app. As you build your animations they’re recorded on different tracks, it has a similar look to video editing software. Using buttons on the screen you’ll be able to add in your puppets, change their size and move them around the screen. You’ll be able to save these different tracks so your puppets become personalized and you can use them over and over. As you record your animations you can also add in sound through the iPad’s microphone. As it’s all put together it becomes your unique creation. When your video is complete you’ll have the chance to share it with friends, family or the world. PhotoPuppet supports sharing your videos via Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Email. You can also share your puppets if you have the iPhone app PhotoPuppet Go.
PhotoPuppet HD is a meaty app, I highly suggest going through the help section (app & online) and tutorials before you dive into a film. It definitely has the most features for this type of app but I would hesitate to recommend it for young users. I think it’s going to be best for older Elementary schoolers and beyond. The puppets and animating features are intricate which provides great opportunities for creativity but the potential for frustration as well. I’d suggest younger users stick with Toontastic and the older users go with PhotoPuppet. I definitely think they’ll find it’s a fabulous outlet for your creativity. I did.
*I’ve been given 5 promo codes to give away for PhotoPuppet HD. Hooray! If you’re interested in adding puppeteer to your list of skills then leave me a comment. I’m going to run the contest through Friday and I’ll award the codes Saturday morning. These codes are for an iPad app.*
