PIX English Spanish Picture Dictionary

September 29, 2010

PIX is a English Spanish dictionary that combines vocabulary with real life photographs. The vocabulary is divided into categories and various subcategories. The different topics are represented by thumbnails of pictures. There are sixteen main categories and 125 subcategories. All together that makes for 2100 words and photos. You navigate through the app by tapping on a main category, then tapping on a subcategory (or two) in order to get to the vocabulary. Once you’re there you’ll need to tap on the word you’d like to learn. When you have chosen a word the picture shows up nice and large. At the top of the screen you’ll see the word, written in both English and Spanish. You may tap on each version to hear the different pronunciations.

A “Recent” button at the bottom of the screen takes you to a list of the words you’ve recently looked up. You also have the ability to view all of the words in alphabetical order. If you’d prefer to search for a specific word there’s a screen to handle that as well. Searches can be performed in Spanish or English. As you are studying the app allows you to add words to a favorites list for easy referene.

PIX is well done and it’s a fantastic resource for those who are trying to learn either Spanish or English. The pronunciations sound terrific and I think having the pictures to accompany the vocabulary is a big plus. This app takes good care of those who learn in different ways.

Chalk Walk is a very unique iPad app. It has been developed to help your children improve the pincer grip they use to hold a pencil.

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
