The Pre-School Phonic Crosswords app is a wonderful learning tool designed for children ages 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 years old. I thought that this app was quite unique because I have not seen any other crossword apps for children thus far. Not only will the Pre-School Phonic Crosswords app help children with their spelling – it also introduces the concept of a crossword puzzle and features phonic letter sounds – pretty neat!
There are five fun levels featured in the Pre-School Phonic Crosswords app: Level 1 – simple, single 3 letter word puzzles (i.e. cat, map, etc.), Level 2 – double 3 letter crossword puzzles, this adds a bit of complexity by having two words which share a common letter (i.e. box and fox), Level 3 – single 4 letter word puzzles (i.e. pond and ship), Level 4 – number word puzzles, recognition of the written words for numbers one to ten, and Level 5 – free letter word play, children can select letters to hear their sounds and practice creating words on their own (i.e. spelling their name, etc.). I thought that these five levels of play gave children of various ages the ability to learn at their own speed. I absolutely love that the phonetic letter sounds can be heard to help children with sounding out words – kids will love their penguin friend who sounds out with them!
When playing the app, children will see visual picture clues to help them figure out what the words should be when solving a crossword or other word puzzle. I should mention that parents can sign up to receive a free crossword activity pack for their children – it is a short educational pack of animal themed crosswords which can be printed at home to compliment the learning objectives in the app. Kids will love the print-outs, and it will help give them practice using paper and pencil.
I thought that the Pre-School Phonic Crosswords app was very neat. I think that this app has a lot to offer to children and would be a great learning tool. If you have little ones who are learning to spell and sound-out words – be sure to check this app out!
