Rumplestiltskin HD – A 3D Children’s Interactive Storybook

November 22, 2011

The classic Grimm Brothers’ fairytale comes to life in this new app by Silicon Beach Software, Inc. Rumplestiltskin HD- A 3D Children’s Interactive Storybook, tells the story of Arabella, a young woman who with the help of Rumplestiltskin becomes a princess. For his help Rumplestiltskin asks a terrible price unless Arabella can guess his name. What makes this telling of the story standout from the rest is the stunning 3D visual experience. Each scene of the story can be viewed from 360 degrees with a slide of a finger. The characters in the story are not flat images but can be viewed from different angles. If you tap on a character they will all speak back to you, letting their individual personalities come out. Rumplestiltskin was my favorite character to tap; his character has some very amusing comebacks in response to being poked. Not only do the characters of the story interact with you, but various objects in the scenes also come alive with animation and sound when they are touched. The characters also respond when you touch their belongings (try knocking over the King’s throne to see his response). Another fun element to Rumplestiltskin HD is the hunt for gold coins; there are at least one set of gold coins in each scene for the reader to discover by exploring the room. Rumplestiltskin HD- A 3D Children’s Interactive Storybook allows the reader to discover a classic story in a whole new way.

To make sure the reader has the best experience possible, a 3D training room is provided. Here the reader can learn how to move and then practice moving around the room, zooming in and out of the scene. On every page this app also gives the reader control over turning the narration and background music off and on. One thing that I did notice that was causing some frustration for my daughter was that she could not interact with the scene while the reading scroll was open. Thankfully an option to open/close the reading scroll is offered on each page. I would suggest this app for preschool and elementary school aged children. I have a toddler, and while she loved playing with the characters and objects in the scenes, she had a hard time sitting still for the whole story. Silicon Beach Software, Inc. offers readers an exciting look into the future of children’s books.

*A note from Heather – When I was approached about this app I was told that it was developed using a 3D game engine which makes the 3D similar to what you see in video game consoles. From reading Erin’s review it sounds like it was an innovative reading experience .

Chalk Walk is a very unique iPad app. It has been developed to help your children improve the pincer grip they use to hold a pencil.

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
