Sight Words Free

February 10, 2009

I have two amazing readers at my house and a preschooler who surprises me with the words he recognizes. Words like stop, go, Wal-mart, open, Target, Kohls and Sonic. Important words. I stumbled across Sight Words Free and thought it might be a good way to broaden his horizons. He already loves playing with my iPhone so with this I can balance out the time he spends on Penguin Catapult.

IMG_0090 The app shows one sight word in large print. Touch the button that says “next sight word” and….you get the next sight word in the list. The list cycles so the words don’t always show up in the same order. Touch the button that says “speak word” and you hear the word. Ta Da. A simple yet brilliant alternative to flashcards.

I originally downloaded the free version of this app and it has 36 sight words. I’m going to be upgrading to the regular Sight Words 1 app that has 100 words. I’m tagging this app “Makes my job easier” because that’s exactly what it’s going to do. I’d love to sit and go over flashcards with the boy every day but let’s be honest, he’s the 3rd child, there’s another one on the way and if my iPhone can occasionally be used for educational purposes then why not?

WebMD Baby

WebMD Baby was released earlier this month and it is awesome! Seriously one of the best “baby” apps I’ve seen to date

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
