SpeakColorsHD is a speech therapy app that has been developed for toddlers who have speech and language delays, Autism, Down Syndrome and other developmental disorders. The app presents seven colors and two hundred different objects, all are one of those seven colors. The app has two main modes – Phrases and Sentences. In Phrases children begin by picking a color. They’ll see a square with the color and then another square with a picture of an object. They can tap on each square to hear the name of the color and the object. SpeakColorsHD comes with default recordings of the names of the objects and colors but there is also a setup mode where parents and children can record themselves saying the words. In the Sentences mode the colors and objects are still there but the words “the” and “is” have been added to make sentences. Now children can tap on the words, the color and object to hear an entire sentence. The flower is yellow, the hammer is blue. Again, there is a default recording but also a setup mode where custom recordings can be made.
My one suggestion for the app would be a how-to screen or help section for parents just getting started with the app. It took me a little bit of trial and error to realize I was in setup mode instead of play and I couldn’t figure out why my recordings weren’t working correctly. Once I figured out where I was going wrong the process was easy but instructions to begin with would be helpful.
Overall SpeakColorsHD is a simple and effective app with a solid amount of content. I can see this being a very helpful tool in therapy, classroom and family settings. A free version of the app is also available. SpeakColors has seven colors and 100 photographs of objects. It does not have the sentence mode.
