Speech with Milo: Verbs

January 3, 2011

Speech with Milo was developed by a Speech-Language Pathologist who specializes in working with children. Milo comes with two sets of instructions, one is for therapists who are using the app professionally. The other set is for parents. The instructions explain how to use the app and also provide ideas for how the app can be used as a jumping off point into other activities. Speech with Milo: Verbs contains a very thorough list of “action” words. Before you begin using the app with your child you can go through this list and choose the words you’d like to focus on. Once your list is ready it’s time to watch Milo.

When your child taps Milo he will perform an action word. A narrator will announce the word that Milo is doing. You may also tap a button to hear a phrase that contains the verb. As your child progresses through the app MIlo will change locations and use different props for his actions. The narration of the words can also be turned off to suit your needs.

Milo is a cute little mouse and he’s fun to watch as he performs his actions. This app is a fun alternative to flashcards and the animation will help children grasp the meaning of the different verbs. Lastly, I really appreciated the two sets of instructions. As a parent it’s nice to have access to a tool like this AND to be provided with ideas of how I can use it.

Speech with Milo: Verbs is a universal app. I tried it out on my iPhone and Milo looked terrific.

Chalk Walk is a very unique iPad app. It has been developed to help your children improve the pincer grip they use to hold a pencil.

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
