SpellBoard with iPad Promo Codes

Spelling. Is it a bad word in your home? My girls usually do fine with their weekly spelling tests but there have been times when a particular set of words has caused fits. My eldest once asked me why she needed to learn to spell when she could type on the computer and the squiggly red line always told her what words were wrong. Took me a minute to come up with an adequate response to that question. Well if you’ve got a student in your home that could use a little extra help with their spelling lists then I’ve got a fantastic iPad app to share with you – SpellBoard. It comes from the developer of MathBoard and it lets you (or your child) create spelling lists that your child can use for practice.

You’ll begin by adding in students, then it’s time to create your spelling list. You are going to type in the word and then record yourself saying it. You’ll also have the option of recording a sentence that uses the word. The process is simple enough that your children could add in their own lists for extra practice. Once the list is finished it’s time to turn the app over to your children. They can either study the words or take a quiz. When studying the words they appear one at a time at the top of the screen. Underneath the word is a space for your child to practice writing them out. There are several marker colors to use and an eraser to wipe away mistakes. Here your child can tap a button to hear your recording of the word. There’s also a definition button. This button pulls up a definition of the word and the best part is you don’t have to enter the definition. The app finds it for you. Terrific! After enough practice it’s time to take a quiz. The quiz presents the words by playing your recording. If you’ve recorded a sentence that will also play. The quiz is designed to simulate an actual spelling test in a classroom. There is a space at the bottom of the screen for your child to practice writing out the word before they type it in for the quiz. The quiz will track correct and incorrect answers. Each student can have their own lists and it’s easy to manage the words for everyone.

SpellBoard is developed for the iPad and costs $4.99. After testing it out and using it for a few weeks I think this is an app that’s worth every penny. Now, if you want your child to be able to practice words on an iPhone or iPod Touch there is a companion app called SpellBoard Buddy. With SpellBoard Buddy you can’t create quizzes but your child can study and take practice quizzes that were created with the iPad app. The quizzes are shared through iTunes file sharing or email. I haven’t quite gotten the hang of this process yet. PalaWare has provided several spelling lists that use sight words so those are always available. When practicing words in SpellBoard Buddy they’re presented as flashcards, there’s no space to practice writing out the words. The same is for the quizzes, no practice space due to the size of the iPhone’s screen. My only suggestion for SpellBoard is to include instructions on exactly how to share lists. It’s probably very easy to do but I just couldn’t figure it out.

If you own an iPad and have a speller in your home then SpellBoard is an app that I’d put on my must own list. It’s versatility and educational value make it an absolute winner.

Guess who else can be winners? Twenty-five readers can becuase PalaWare gave me 25 promo codes to give away. If you have an iPad and can use this app in your home or classroom please take a code! I’m swamped this weekend and very behind on emails so I’m going to list the codes out and let you take them for yourselves. Please leave a comment saying which number you took and work from the top of the list down. My only request is that you visit iTunes and leave feedback or a rating after you’ve seen how wonderful this app is for yourselves. Promo codes only valid in the US App Store.

Chalk Walk

Chalk Walk is a very unique iPad app. It has been developed to help your children improve the pincer grip they use to hold a pencil.

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
