Splash Math

The full title of this app is Splash Math – Comprehensive 3rd Grade Math Workbook and that’s exactly what it reminds me of. A very modern, very hip Math workbook. The app features sixteen chapters that cover over 200 skills that third graders will learn in Math. All of this is in line with third grade educational standards. Some of the covered topics include fractions, probability, time, money, addition, subtraction, place value, multiplication and more. All of the content is wrapped up in a fun underwater theme.

Splash Math is broken up into two sections – Practice and Play. In Practice mode you may choose which of the sixteen chapters you’d like your child to work on. Each of those chapters is broken up into subchapters. Once you’ve selected the topic then your child will be taken through an interactive set of workbook questions. If they exit before finishing the section then Splash Math will remember where they left off and pick right back up again later. Play mode puts your child’s knowledge to the test and asks them questions from all of the topics. They’ll earn points for their responses and at the end of the quiz they can use those points to purchase prizes for a virtual aquarium.

Splash Math comes with several very nice customization features that will let you tailor the workbook to your child’s needs. You may select the number of questions they are given in Play Mode. You can also turn on (or off) the topics you’d like to see covered in the quiz. The app allows you to create several player profiles and each one can have separate settings. Another key feature of Splash Math is the email reports. You have the ability to request a weekly report that will outline your child’s progress in the app. It’s a very nice way to keep track of how your child is working through the workbook.

I’m very impressed with the thoroughness of content in Splash Math. I really like the workbook concept and it works well here. The developers were smart to make the activities interactive and to add in the aquarium for fun breaks. This is most definitely a well thought out, well designed, educational and entertaining Math app.

Update 8/30 - Splash Math has had several new releases since the time of this original review. The most recent is Splash Math -1st Grade School Math Workbook HD. Cost is $4.99 and it’s an iPad only app. Also available is the 2nd Grade Summer Math Workbook HD, also $4.99 and iPad only.
