Staraoke & Christmas Staraoke

December 20, 2010

I was just recently introduced to Staraoke. Apparently it began as a PC game and evolved into a hit children’s karaoke television show that has aired in nine European countries. Now it’s undergone another transformation and become an app. The Staraoke app asks you to guide a cartoon character along a path, collecting points as you go. How do you guide the character? By singing. The app features three well known children’s songs and it displays the words on the screen. You sing the words into the iPad or iPhone’s microphone and the app judges your pitch and moves the character in the direction of your pitch. If the path goes up, you’ll want your pitch to go up. If it goes down, sing lower. That sort of thing. When you reach the end of the song your points will be tallied up. You may play in either solo mode or a singing contest. The contest mode will let up to four players battle against each other.

I am fairly self conscious about my singing voice but I found myself quite enjoying this app. After a little bit I began focusing less on the cracking voice and more on trying to get it to go up or down like it should so I could go where I wanted to go. I was surprised that I really did like the concept and experience. I tested the app out after my children were in bed but I know that the next time they get on the iPad I will have one, if not two, little singers staraoking (staraokeying??) their hearts out. My one request of the developers? More songs please. Lots more.

*A special Christmas version of Staraoke is now available. It has three holiday songs for you and your children to sing along with. Price is $1.99 and this link will take you to it’s App Store description. There is also a lite version available with only one song. *

Chalk Walk

Chalk Walk is a very unique iPad app. It has been developed to help your children improve the pincer grip they use to hold a pencil.

What I Do

I review iPhone apps for moms. I have a decent grasp of techy things but the technical guts (for lack of a better word) of how the apps work are beyond me. So my reviews will be practical and purely subjective. Reviews for moms by a real life, actual mom. My kids will vouch for me.
