Sticky Mosaics Butterflies

My two eldest children are both girls and we’ve seen our fair share of glittery, bejeweled craft projects in our home. One of the products that my eight year old particularly enjoys are the Sticky Mosaics. To create one you take tiny colored, shiny foam tiles and place them in a pattern to create a picture, a mosaic. These projects will keep her busy for hours but small pieces and a baby sister don’t mix well so we haven’t any around since before Miss J. was born. Because of this I was excited to hear that Sticky Mosaics has created an iPad app that mimics their well known projects. I thought it’d be perfect for my house. The fun of a craft without the temptation of hundreds of tiny squares and jewels to eat.
So how does the app compare to the real thing? First of all, it’s much cheaper and you’ll be able to reuse the mosaics over and over again. You also won’t be losing tiles in the carpet or coming up short on jewels at the very end. That’s all very good! Sticky Mosaics Butterflies gives you four different butterfly templates. Each one fills up the iPad screen and has small numbered shapes on it. At the bottom of the screen is a key. Next to the numbers in the key are the mosaic tiles and jewels. Your child will need to drag the pieces onto the numbered shapes in the pattern. When they do it correctly the piece will stay put. Once the picture is completed your child can place their finger on the screen and if they hold very still the butterfly just might land on their finger.
Sticky Mosaics Butterfies is very easy to use and I think the developers have done a terrific job translating their craft projects into an iPad app. I hate to see an app completely replace a hands on craft project but I think this is an excellent solution for a situation like mine where small pieces are a nuisance. My only hangup about this app is that you only get four butterfly patterns, it just doesn’t seem like enough for the price. Six butterflies would have felt more reasonable but perhaps more will come in an update. Other than that, this is a fun app that can also be educational, teaching hand eye coordination, number recognition and patterning.
A free version – Sticky Mosaics Butterflies Lite – can be found in the App Store, it will give you one butterfly template to try out and you can’t beat that price.
