StoryBox is an award winning children’s magazine from the United Kingdom that has now been brought to the iPad. This digital magazine has a little bit of everything. There’s a children’s story, a comic, a science lesson, a look into the animal world, some fun and games and an illustrated story with no words. Yes, no words! Each section of the magazine is interactive, entertaining and educational. The app has been well crafted. Thanks to StoryBox I actually learned why airplanes leave trails in the sky. I’ve always had a hunch but the Science with WhizKid section clearly explained it to me.
The Animal World section gives readers a glimpse into the world of Humpback whales. I liked the way the information is followed up with “amazing but true” facts, my kids always enjoy those. The fun and games part of StoryBox includes several activities centered around kites. There are dot to dots, coloring pages, a sequencing activity, a matching game and more. SamSam is a comic strip and you can also watch a YouTube video from a TV series of the same name. The last section of the magazine stars a character named Polo and his story has no words, only pictures and music. I always like to see what my children come up with when they “read” stories like this. They are such a springboard for the imagination. Polo’s adventures are to be continued in the next StoryBox edition.
At the very end of the magazine readers will find a sneak peek of the next edition of StoryBox. There will be another story, more answers from the WhizKid, fun and games, along with the return of Polo and SamSam. I thought the entire magazine was great and well suited for early elementary schoolers, Kindergarten to about Third grade.
