Here is an intriguing app. StoryBoy is an ebook reader for kids. It’s like a mini Kindle of sorts. You download the app and then from within it you can go to the StoryBoy online store and purchase additional stories to read.  Right now there are two stories that are included in the original app download – Three Little Pigs and First Words. For a limited time you can also download four additional books for free, from the StoryBoy online store.

The app is easy to use. It opens up and you’ll see two buttons at the bottom of your screen: My Library and eBook Store. Tap “My Library” and you’ll be able to access the books that you’ve already downloaded. Tap the book you want and you’re off to read the story. If you tap “eBook Store” you’ll be connected to the online book store. Here there are several different options. The “Preschool” button will show you preschool books that are available.  “Kids” lets you view titles for older readers. “Parents” gives you access to articles geared towards mom and dad. And “What’s New” wasn’t available at the time of this review but I’m going out on a limb here and guessing it will display new items at the book store.

I like how StoryBoy allows you to download additional stories without having to go through iTunes. Right now the available titles are all free so it’s a fantastic deal. I am wondering if there’s going to be some sort of parental control feature that will prevent kids from being able to download stories. I hope so!

From November 25-27, StoryBoy’s two holiday e-books can be downloaded for free. Unfortunately, some of our earlier offers for free titles have expired but check our store regularly because we release new titles every month and run specials! We have 11 titles now and will be releasing three more in December.

Great point on the parental control feature – I’ve always wished that Apple would design a more secure lock feature for the iPhone because my two-year-old figured out ages ago how to unlock it.
In order to download new stories, you need to sign into your StoryBoy account. For paid stories, there is the added iTunes account sign-in level which should deter busy fingers. That being said, any of the content you find in StoryBoy is safe and appropriate for even the youngest kids.

Please do e-mail us at support@skyvu.net if you have any questions or comments to share. Thanks!

Is there sound with this app so it reads the book to your kid?

The stories that I tried out (First Words & The 3 Little Pigs) had an auto reader that would read to your child. You could also turn that off.
